<full-text>
Description: The Global Affairs Undergraduate Program is announcing an open competition for all its students, regardless of year. The competition will be in two categories: Essay and Short Story. Both will be between 2000-3000 words. The author's name and the word count must be clearly placed at the top of each entry.

Theme: The entry should be "global" in theme. This could be about a recent, or not recent, visit to a foreign country, or an encounter with a foreign person, or a comment on a news item. This theme is merely suggestive, not restrictive. The story/essay will be considered even if it is set in rural America, as long as it has some global sensibility.

Criteria: Short story: Stories will be judged on both form and content. Language, charaterisation, setting, and other formal elements should accompany and highlight a seriousness of thought. At the same time, don't forget that a good story must also entertain the reader.

Essay: Winning essays will have a good question (more original the better), a clear argument (you need to state explicitly your point), sound reasoning (why your point makes sense), and backup by some empirical facts. Please keep in mind that you are not aiming at an A but are in a competition with other participants.

Prize: Up to two first prize winners will be selected in each category. Each will be awarded a cash prize of $250 and a certificate of commendation from GLOA. Up to two second prize winners will be selected from each category. Each will be awarded a cash prize of $150 and a certificate of commendation from GLOA.

Judges: The short story competition will be judged by international author, Professor Helon Habila, who is also a GLOA faculty.

The Essay will be judged by Professor Ming Wan.

Deadline: All entries must be sent to Karen Kihiu at Robinson B 441 by March 1, 2010. Only hard copies are acceptable. The winners will be notified by April 1, 2010. The awards will be formally presented at the graduation party at the end of the year.

Questions: Please do not approach Karen Kihiu or the two judges for substantive advising about your short story or essay, to be fair to every participant.
</full-text>
